Camellia flowers
In the southern part of Korea, camellia trees bloom beautifully even in winter, and they boast the colors of spring alone when there are no flowers. Camellia flowers do not have a scent, but they attract the nightingale with their light, providing nectar and attracting birds. Camellia flowers are usually red, but there are white camellia flowers on Hongdo and Geomundo, which are called Seosang (瑞祥) and are carefully protected, and there are pink camellia flowers on Geomundo and Ulleungdo.
Camellia trees mainly grow on islands, reaching as far as Ulleungdo in the east and Daecheongdo in the west. On land, the one in Maryang-ri, Seo-Myeon, Seocheon-gun, Chungcheongnam-do (충남 서천군 서면 마량리 339-2 #마량리동백나무숲) is the northernmost, and inland, the one growing in the grounds of Hwaeomsa Temple at the foot of Jirisan Mountain and the one growing in the grounds of Seonunsa Temple in Samin-ri, Asan-myeon, Gochang-gun, Jeollabuk-do are the northernmost.
Camellia is a phonetic transcription of '冬柏' or '棟柏'. Camellia is a Chinese character word, but it is only used in Korea. It is said that this flower was named Dongbaek (冬柏) because it blooms in winter, and among them, there are some that bloom in spring, so they are also called Chunbaek (春柏)
